On May 1, 1991 Yugoslavia played against then the football newcomers on big European stage, Faroes in a Euro-92 qualifying game at Crvena Zvezda-Red Star-Maracana staduim in Belgrad. That match, won 7-0 by the home team, turned to be not only the very last one where Croat players represented the collapsing country, but also the last one staged by Serbia on home soil before the international embargo because of the war. In that respect, it was a symbolic thing that the new Yugoslavia, now containing players only from Serbia and Montenegro, returned to international football in Belgrade almost five exactly five years later against the same opponent - the Faroes. This time, the scoreline was more respectable for the visitors, who even scored a goal with a wonderful volley by John Petersen, who started an international game for the first time.
