AIK is a
Swedish sports club based in Solna, north of Stockholm.
AIK is short for Allmänna Idrottsklubben which roughly translates into 'The
Public/Common Sports Club'. The name refers to the fundamental idea that the
club should be open for everyone but also to the clubs practicing of 'common'
sports i.e. athletics.
AIK was originally founded in Stockholm 1891 by Isidor Behrens but the club
relocated to Solna in 1937. Football was put into practice 1896 and AIK
enjoyed its first title four years later.
Nowadays AIK's main sport is football but the club is also represented in
ice hockey, bandy, floorball and bowling.
AIK's arena for football is Råsunda Fotbollstadion with a capacity of
36.608. The Ice hockey team is mainly residing at Hovet (8.500) but the more
attracting games are usually played in Globen (13.850).
