A bargain buy signing from FK
Molde (31 goals in 42 games), Norwegian international Solskjaer
scored 18 goals in 33 games in his debut season (1996-97) as
United raced to the title, the media dubbing him the
"Babyfaced Assassin". Hard to disposess, Solskjaer is
good with both feet and has an acute tactical awareness on the
pitch. Scored a number of vital goals during United's
treble-winning campaign of 1998-99, most notably, the memorable
injury-time winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 European
Cup Final in Barcelona. Made his United debut as a substitute at
home to Blackburn, scoring within six minutes of coming on. The
following season though was a disappointment, as injuries
restricted his appearances and he found himself relegated to
fourth-choice striker behind Andy Cole, Paul Scholes and Teddy
Sheringham. In recent times, with Yorke and Cole establishing
such an immediate and devastating relationship, the Norwegian
has mainly been confined to the bench, with occasional starts in
cup matches. Although more often a sub than starter for United
he usually manages to hit double figures in goals.
